[00:00:02] Speaker A = KELLY WALKER: All right, look, I got a whole page on you. Oh, my gosh. Whole page. [00:00:07] Speaker B = Chuck Brakes: Oh, man. [00:00:10] Speaker A: Hi, and welcome to this episode of hustle and pro. I'm your host, Kelly Walker. Today we have Chuck breaks with us. Hey, Chuck, how you doing? Good. Thanks for joining me. [00:00:20] Speaker B: I'm excited. [00:00:20] Speaker A: It's been a long time coming. [00:00:21] Speaker B: It's been a long time. I'm excited. [00:00:23] Speaker A: So, Chuck, you are my teammate. We do this championing of Frisco together. [00:00:30] Speaker B: Yes. [00:00:30] Speaker A: But today I want to talk about you and, like, your teammates. Not so much for sco, but kind of going back a little in your basketball life. Cause that's your main thing, right? We're gonna talk about your other things, but basketball is kind of your main things, which is also why we're here. We're at sports academy at the star, and behind us are these little ballers. Yeah. Mavs and legends camp. So good setting for us to have our chat. But take me through what basketball looked like for you growing up and through however long you played. [00:01:05] Speaker B: Yeah. So I was fortunate enough, I was very fortunate to grow up in the south of France. My dad, he played professional basketball in Europe for about twelve years. So I spent about five years over there. Born in the south side of Chicago. So it gave me a little different perspective about things. But, yeah, basketball. I saw basketball from an overseas perspective first is how I learned it. So, you know, then being around my dad and his teammates and stuff like that. So, yeah, at an early age, I saw it a little differently than, you know, United States basketball. [00:01:44] Speaker A: From the jump? [00:01:44] Speaker B: From there. [00:01:45] Speaker A: From the jump, from the jump. [00:01:46] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:01:47] Speaker A: You had basketball in your life? How long did you play? Where all did you play? [00:01:54] Speaker B: Just as far as my life. [00:01:55] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:01:56] Speaker B: Okay, let's see. Yep. [00:01:57] Speaker A: So you played all your life? [00:01:58] Speaker B: I did, I did. I was fortunate enough to play at Della Sale High School, south side of Chicago. Got recruited to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. [00:02:11] Speaker A: Not bad. [00:02:12] Speaker B: Yep. Ended up graduated from University of Illinois Chicago. That's in Chicago. Of course, then I had, I played for a team in Alberta, Calgary, and that league wasn't good, so it dissolved. Then I played in Australia for about five years. [00:02:35] Speaker A: Oh, wow. [00:02:35] Speaker B: Yep. I played in Launceston, played in. Shoot, I'm drawing a blank. [00:02:42] Speaker A: I didn't know you were in Australia. [00:02:44] Speaker B: For five years, Johnny blank. Right now in the other city that I play for. Shoot, what was the name of it? [00:02:49] Speaker A: It was a minute ago. [00:02:50] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It'll come to me. It'll come to me. But, yeah, so I spent some time over there, too. Australia's a great Melbourne. Melbourne. [00:02:56] Speaker A: That's what it was. Yeah. [00:02:57] Speaker B: It's a great country. Great country. Loved it. [00:02:59] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay. And that was it. Did you go from Australia to anywhere else? [00:03:04] Speaker B: Nope, that was it. That was it. So had a pretty good feel, pretty good career with basketball. I was able to achieve a lot of my goals that I wanted to. [00:03:13] Speaker A: Achieve after that time as a player. You coached, right? [00:03:18] Speaker B: No. So after my degree was in radio and tv broadcasting, so I was actually doing the news for a few years. [00:03:26] Speaker A: I didn't know that. [00:03:27] Speaker B: In Milwaukee, Wisconsin. That wasn't my passion. My passion was sports, and I wanted to be a sports broadcaster, but those jobs are hard to come by. [00:03:37] Speaker A: Right. [00:03:37] Speaker B: So then I switched from that to what we're doing now. It was with visit Milwaukee at the time. Yep. Visit Milwaukee for about three years, then moved to Frisco. And when I got here to Frisco, visit Dallas. Didn't have any availability. I don't even think visit Frisco was around yet. I was at hotels. Yeah. I was with Starwood first. [00:04:05] Speaker A: Okay. [00:04:06] Speaker B: Did Starwood hotel sales, then with the Cowboys? Yep. Then worked for the Cowboys for what, three or four years as well. [00:04:17] Speaker A: Okay. [00:04:18] Speaker B: Mm hmm. [00:04:19] Speaker A: Okay. We had to take a quick break. I don't know if you guys could hear that, but all the basketball campers were coming in to where we were, so we stepped into a classroom here. As we're academy, we're in a quieter space. But, Chuck, you were telling me about kind of the different stops you'd been with the cowboys and different things. Yes. So before we go on to kind of some more of that, I want to go back one little bit. Like, yes, we obviously know you were a basketball player, but tell me on a couple of these other things, I want to know, did you play or were you a fan or are you a player? Because these are things we talked about. Soccer. [00:04:58] Speaker B: Yeah, big fan. [00:04:59] Speaker A: Fan on. [00:05:00] Speaker B: And player and player as a kid. [00:05:02] Speaker A: Okay. [00:05:03] Speaker B: I played a lot. I played more than basketball. [00:05:05] Speaker A: Really? [00:05:05] Speaker B: As a kid? Yeah. Big soccer player. [00:05:07] Speaker A: Is that because where you grew up? [00:05:09] Speaker B: Yes, exactly. Soccer is bigger than basketball in France. [00:05:12] Speaker A: Right. [00:05:13] Speaker B: So. Yes. [00:05:13] Speaker A: Yeah. That surprised me. One day you said something like that, or you knew what? I don't know. We started talking about soccer, and I'm like, didn't know you were a soccer guy. [00:05:20] Speaker B: Big soccer. [00:05:20] Speaker A: All right. Tennis. [00:05:22] Speaker B: Big player and fan play. [00:05:25] Speaker A: When did you play tennis? [00:05:26] Speaker B: I played tennis all the time. [00:05:27] Speaker A: Yeah. Growing up. [00:05:28] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:28] Speaker A: And now. And now you do, even with your knees and such? [00:05:32] Speaker B: Not as I'm not as competitive. [00:05:33] Speaker A: Okay. [00:05:34] Speaker B: Not as competitive. That's a good point. [00:05:35] Speaker A: But you still play. [00:05:36] Speaker B: I get out there swinging around. [00:05:38] Speaker A: Still like to get out there. Okay. Didn't know that. I just thought you, like. I know you watch it, right? You always are coming in, talking about always how much tennis you watched and, like. So who's your favorite tennis. [00:05:48] Speaker B: Favorite tennis player of all time or right now? [00:05:51] Speaker A: Either. [00:05:52] Speaker B: All time. Pete Sampras. Right now between Alcarez and Djokovic, I. [00:05:58] Speaker A: Mean, we just watched them compete in the Olympics. [00:06:01] Speaker B: Joker won. [00:06:02] Speaker A: So, fresh on your mind. It is. What an emotional, like, cool sports moment that was to watch him. Absolutely. Two more. [00:06:09] Speaker B: Golf fan and player. [00:06:12] Speaker A: You play a lot now. [00:06:13] Speaker B: I play a lot now. A lot more now. [00:06:15] Speaker A: What's your favorite courses? [00:06:16] Speaker B: Right now, I'll probably say PGA. PGA east. [00:06:20] Speaker A: Kind of like. [00:06:21] Speaker B: Yeah, it's a. It's a very nice course. [00:06:23] Speaker A: Yeah, very. I mean, it's. Here. It's like. Yeah, I mean, the newest thing is amazing. [00:06:29] Speaker B: You don't seem like you're in Frisco, right? Yeah. So that would be it. [00:06:33] Speaker A: Baseball fan. [00:06:37] Speaker B: Fan only. [00:06:37] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:06:38] Speaker B: Didn't play baseball a little bit growing up, but I. Yeah, yeah. Fan. [00:06:41] Speaker A: Cause I feel like I've seen you at games or, you know, like, you enjoy watching. [00:06:45] Speaker B: Yes. [00:06:46] Speaker A: Is Rangers your team or. [00:06:48] Speaker B: No. [00:06:49] Speaker A: Are you, like, white Sox? [00:06:50] Speaker B: I'm a Yankee fan. [00:06:51] Speaker A: What? [00:06:52] Speaker B: I'm from Chicago. [00:06:53] Speaker A: I know. How did that happen? [00:06:56] Speaker B: So it's funny. Again, crazy. So here's the story now. [00:06:58] Speaker A: I'm sorry I even asked. [00:06:59] Speaker B: That's all right. Here's the story. Not growing up in Chicago, you know, I didn't get a lot of that. You know, watching the bears on Sundays and, you know, going to the games, I didn't get any of that. So then when we moved back, you know, my dad was busy a lot, so he was doing his thing. So I wasn't. I didn't get none of that good Chicago culture from the teams. [00:07:25] Speaker A: Okay. [00:07:25] Speaker B: Then the Bears sucked at the time fair, and, you know, Chicago had Michael Jordan, of course, which is cool. But, like, with the Cubs and the socks, they just runded good. So in my younger adult days, I met Derek Jeter. [00:07:42] Speaker A: Okay. [00:07:43] Speaker B: Super cool guy, and was able to hang out with him. I'm like, you know what? [00:07:47] Speaker A: That's why you're a Yankees fan. Okay. So you. Growing up, you weren't necessarily. You just, like, as a younger adult. [00:07:52] Speaker B: Guy, you said, and then them being successful definitely helps. [00:07:57] Speaker A: Meeting a player and them being cool is. [00:08:00] Speaker B: That's how I became a Cowboys fan. [00:08:01] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:08:02] Speaker B: That's exactly how I met. [00:08:03] Speaker A: Which player did you meet? [00:08:04] Speaker B: It was a bunch of them. So I came down here in 1994 for a basketball tournament. That was my senior year in college. [00:08:11] Speaker A: That was cowboys. [00:08:12] Speaker B: That was cowboys. Cowboys. So Drew Pearson had a sports bar, and we went in there, and it was. I don't remember who was all in there, but had the best time of my life. And I said, you know what? And then the next year, they won the Super bowl. How was I going in? So a lot of people think that it happened when I moved here. It didn't happen. I've always been a fan. [00:08:35] Speaker A: Okay, man. [00:08:37] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:37] Speaker A: Okay. All right. That brings me to my next point about, like, I didn't know that. I'm learning so much. [00:08:43] Speaker B: Yes. [00:08:43] Speaker A: Okay, here's the deal. I wanted to get that your basketball info out first before I talk about me, but yes, okay. About five years ago, okay. I was at a team outing for the Frisco college baseball classic. [00:08:56] Speaker B: Yes. [00:08:57] Speaker A: And Josh Dill introduced me to you. You don't know? You don't remember? I'm just one of many people that comes up and shakes your head, but do you remember where that would have been? It was downstairs here on the turf. When this was newer. It was like a. It was on the turf. [00:09:16] Speaker B: Okay. [00:09:17] Speaker A: Big rounds. The guys were eating a meal or something. [00:09:19] Speaker B: Yes, yes, yes, yes. [00:09:20] Speaker A: I don't know. Probably when that classic was coming into town, and you guys probably brought that here, all the things with your work and all that. And I remembered thinking a couple notes. Everybody knew you. Everybody knows you, right? But if you're at a sports event in this town, like everybody knows you are, I knew I wanted you on as a guest. [00:09:38] Speaker B: Okay. [00:09:39] Speaker A: And I feel like I emailed you after. No, I feel like I emailed you and said, oh, my gosh, it was nice to meet you or LinkedIn you or something would like to have you on. So that's my claim to why it took four and a half years to get you on as a guest. I feel like I tried once, and then I wasn't persistent or whatever. [00:09:59] Speaker B: So after you. [00:10:01] Speaker A: My defense. [00:10:01] Speaker B: You did. Hey, I understand. After you did. I think you interviewed. Did you interview Corey? Yeah, I think it was after that. Yes. After that is when you emailed me. [00:10:14] Speaker A: Oh, oh, okay. [00:10:14] Speaker B: Cause they said, why don't you have chuck on here? That's what they said. [00:10:17] Speaker A: Okay. [00:10:18] Speaker B: And you said, you know what? I'll be okay. [00:10:19] Speaker A: So it was somewhere in all that and then. Yeah. And then, like, silence. Like, I never knew you. Until a year and a half ago. I started working with you then. Yeah. And so now, like, we talk sports all the time. [00:10:31] Speaker B: All the time. [00:10:32] Speaker A: So that brings me to this. Like, everybody in sports, and Frisco knows you, so I was gonna say, like, why is that? Right, but the cowboys story makes a little more sense. [00:10:43] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:43] Speaker A: And then you talking about, like, your job, right, is to know people in sports in this town and in other markets. [00:10:51] Speaker B: Yes. [00:10:51] Speaker A: Even more so, too. Right? [00:10:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:52] Speaker A: Sports businesses. So that they want to come do their business here. [00:10:57] Speaker B: Yes, absolutely. Yeah. So it's just, you know, I've lived here since 2005, so, you know what? My sports background and at the time, knowing a few of the Dallas Maverick players, so they opened the doors for me to, you know, meet a lot of people. You know, my basketball program, being in a. In the gym every weekend, you know, you get to meet people and stuff like that. So that's pretty much probably where it happened. I mean, like, every weekend for years, you know, I'm in the gyms and stuff like that, and. Or I'm at the games, and people see me with some of the players that they, you know, they want to introduce themselves. Yeah. So. [00:11:38] Speaker A: Okay. So that brings me to my next thing. I wrote down, you know, some cool. [00:11:42] Speaker B: Dudes I do know. [00:11:43] Speaker A: So, like, you know, you talk about, like, water cooler talk and stuff, and I have to basically walk past your office to get to mine every day, right? [00:11:50] Speaker B: Yes. [00:11:50] Speaker A: So, like, not in a bad way, but you drop names of guys that you know, you've already done it, and I hold back, Pearson. [00:11:59] Speaker B: I hold back. [00:12:00] Speaker A: Right. I know. You know, I found out one on the way here that, you know, that I was like, what? You know him? But, you know, NBA players, WNBA players, NFL players, like, I swear, you know, like, boxers and, you name it. [00:12:15] Speaker B: Boxer boxers. Yeah. [00:12:16] Speaker A: All kinds of athletes and stuff. So are you the guy that goes up to them and starts it up, or do people introduce? They already know. Like, how do you. How do you know to where you can text this guy on the way here and say, hey, what's up? [00:12:32] Speaker B: We have mutual friends, is where it starts. It's always, I'm never that guy. Oh, my God. Kelly, how you doing? No, I'm never that guy. [00:12:40] Speaker A: You're very chill. [00:12:41] Speaker B: I'm very chill. We have mutual friends, okay. And then we'll be able to spend some time together, and I consider myself a cool dude, so. And that's cool dudes like you, right? [00:12:56] Speaker A: There you go. [00:12:56] Speaker B: Yeah, that's where. [00:12:57] Speaker A: Well, that's part of it, though. You gotta be cool about it. You can't be. Oh, I'm a big fan. Oh, I wanna meet you. I wanna hang out with you and needy. [00:13:04] Speaker B: You can't be needy either. [00:13:05] Speaker A: Overdo it, right? [00:13:06] Speaker B: It can't be. Gimme, gimme, gimme. Hey, can I get some tickets? You can't do any of that either. [00:13:11] Speaker A: No, but, but you've gotten some cool stuff like that. [00:13:15] Speaker B: You've told stories. Yes. [00:13:16] Speaker A: Do you remember we sat out here again at sports academy? It was probably army bowl, shrine bowl. Some event was happening and we sat out in the front and you told me a story. I feel like it was a Kobe story. [00:13:31] Speaker B: Yes, yes. The US army. Yeah, yeah. Kobe story. [00:13:33] Speaker A: Right. [00:13:34] Speaker B: About a co worker of mine that was a big Kobe fan. [00:13:37] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:13:38] Speaker B: And he wanted to meet Kobe Bryant. And I had just started with this hotel and I heard him say, hey, the hotel had a suite at the AAC. And I knew he was a big Kobe Bryant fan. And I said, hey, I can get you to meet Kobe, but I would have to go to the gate. [00:13:57] Speaker A: You went out on a limb there. A big limb, even. A big limb. [00:14:00] Speaker B: But see, I've. [00:14:01] Speaker A: That's risky. [00:14:02] Speaker B: It's risky, but I've already done it. So I knew that I can do it again. [00:14:06] Speaker A: Okay. With Kobe. Like you had already done that. [00:14:08] Speaker B: Well, I knew this system. I knew, I knew where the players go out at AAC. I met Kobe a couple of times before to where again? Mutual friends. He had. He don't know my name, but he, oh, that's the one guy give you a hi. [00:14:23] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:14:23] Speaker B: So I know the players come out one way. I got a friend of mine that'll get us down right there to where the players come out. And, and I told my friend Joe, I said, joe, whatever you do. The terminology is don't get it hot. And he was like, what do you mean get it hot? I said, hey, when you see him, don't get, oh my God. And of course he got it hot. So it's hard though, if you love. [00:14:46] Speaker A: These players, like people like me. It's like I either will shut down. [00:14:50] Speaker B: Or I'll be like, yeah. So he did meet Kobe, but didn't get any pictures. So now his family didn't even believe him. [00:14:58] Speaker A: Aw, you gotta at least like snap a blurry something, you know? [00:15:03] Speaker B: But he didn't. [00:15:04] Speaker A: I know he blew it in the moment. In those moments you might have like 2 seconds. [00:15:08] Speaker B: That's it. [00:15:09] Speaker A: They might just be walking by and you get the whole, like, that's it. Hey. [00:15:12] Speaker B: Right. Right there. [00:15:13] Speaker A: That's it. [00:15:13] Speaker B: That's it. So, I was fortunate enough to be in that situation with Kobe a few times. That's how I was able to. I mean, I waved Kobe over, and he came. [00:15:23] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:24] Speaker B: Come on. So, yeah, I feel kind of good about that. [00:15:26] Speaker A: That's a good one. I mean, that is a. That's an ultimate name drop. And then, like, you. But you grew up or you played basketball or. I don't know. You have, like, childhood friends that are pro players, too, right? [00:15:38] Speaker B: Juwan Howard is a really good friend of mine that, you know, that's a hopefully soon to be a hall of famer. [00:15:45] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:46] Speaker B: Played at University of Michigan, so Michael Findley, that's. He's in Mavs headquarters. Well, you know, leadership office. Yeah, I know a few. I know a few players. That was my generation, so. [00:16:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:00] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:16:01] Speaker A: And then I see that you. I mean, you work in sports, so you're always at sports things. Right. That we go at because we helped maybe make them happen here or something. But then, like, in your own time, you're also, like, did you go to a WNBA game, and did you check out some Caitlin Clark action and stuff like that? Like, you're always out in other. Not in Alfrisco all the time. Right. But, like, you're usually watching basketball, tennis. [00:16:29] Speaker B: I watch it all. Yeah. My wife hates it. But anything with a ball, I'm watching. [00:16:34] Speaker A: So you're going with guy. You're going with friends, everybody. Yeah. [00:16:37] Speaker B: I go with anybody. [00:16:38] Speaker A: Dallas open tennis. [00:16:39] Speaker B: Oh, absolutely. I went every year. [00:16:41] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:16:42] Speaker B: At SMU, I went every year. So I'll be here. When it's here, I'll be here. [00:16:44] Speaker A: So you're gonna know that really well. [00:16:46] Speaker B: Yes. Looking forward to it. [00:16:47] Speaker A: February 1. Right. So you're gonna be, like, all over that. [00:16:51] Speaker B: I'm gonna be in the mix. I'm gonna be a volunteer. [00:16:54] Speaker A: You're gonna be like, no, you're not. [00:16:56] Speaker B: I'm there. [00:16:56] Speaker A: You're gonna know, like, all the players. So you're gonna be, like, somewhere cool. [00:16:59] Speaker B: Yes. [00:17:00] Speaker A: That's the waving at us, being, like, here with my guys. Yeah. But you will, like, you'll actually know. I don't follow tenants enough to be familiar, but, like, you will know who's here. [00:17:10] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. I know exactly who all they are. [00:17:12] Speaker A: Yeah. Is there somebody that's coming here with this whole Dallas open? It's an upgrade, you know, event from the level you watched it at SMU. Is there a big name that you think will draw here that you're looking for, or something, you know? You know what I mean? [00:17:29] Speaker B: Yep. You know, I think with Isner being a part of it is big. He's a local guy, so he'll add to that, you know, Tiafo. Tiafo was a really good up and coming young player. And then, you know, number one player, I think, is still Alcaraz. Alcarez is either one, two or three in the world. [00:17:47] Speaker A: Pete, he could be here. [00:17:47] Speaker B: Yeah, he could be here. [00:17:48] Speaker A: For real? [00:17:49] Speaker B: Yes. [00:17:49] Speaker A: Okay. I didn't realize that. I know we were talking like, high level international, but I didn't know it was that level. [00:17:56] Speaker B: ATP 500? Yes. [00:17:58] Speaker A: That's amazing. [00:17:58] Speaker B: That's exciting. [00:17:59] Speaker A: Okay, who's tall? Are you or John Isner? [00:18:02] Speaker B: Oh, isn't it way taller than mine? I'm looking at Jon. [00:18:04] Speaker A: He's so tall. [00:18:05] Speaker B: Yeah, he's a tall guy. [00:18:06] Speaker A: How tall are you? [00:18:07] Speaker B: I'm like six, seven. He's like six 9610. [00:18:10] Speaker A: He just seems so tall and he's so slender, so it even looks taller. Right. [00:18:13] Speaker B: He's a nice guy, too. [00:18:14] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, he's a nice guy. Yeah. I just remember the first time we saw him at something, I was like, dang, he's tall. How does he even get around? And then I saw him playing pickleball with Dirk. [00:18:22] Speaker B: Did you. [00:18:23] Speaker A: They are both. Yeah, on the tv, they are both. Like. Their wingspan gets across the pickleball court. Like, they don't even have to move. [00:18:32] Speaker B: They don't have to move much at all. [00:18:33] Speaker A: It was awesome. Okay, real quick, though, I wanna ask you about your kids. [00:18:38] Speaker B: Okay. [00:18:38] Speaker A: Cause I hear you talk about your kids all the time. Your grandbaby. [00:18:42] Speaker B: Oh, my God. [00:18:42] Speaker A: Right? And so were they all. How many kids do you have? [00:18:46] Speaker B: Three. [00:18:46] Speaker A: Three. All basketball players? No, no. [00:18:49] Speaker B: So my oldest, which is my stepdaughter, does not have an athletic bone in. [00:18:54] Speaker A: Her body, not her jam. [00:18:56] Speaker B: God bless her. Super smart. God bless her, man. [00:18:59] Speaker A: Thank goodness. [00:19:00] Speaker B: Raising her, I mean, yeah, that was a struggle. I wanted to put some type of ball in her hand and just. Just didn't work. [00:19:06] Speaker A: That's hard with you being you and then, like, that's your first run at, like. Oh, you drink. Yeah. So, yeah, I love my daughter, Reese. I love you. But, yeah, she played sports all growing up, but she's not an athletic, overly athletic person. Like, we talked this morning about, like, kids get your scholarships, right, college is expensive. And I'm like, we knew early on, like, that was not going to. So anyway, so then you had your son. [00:19:32] Speaker B: Yeah, my son, that's Charles III. And, yeah, he played basketball and he played all the way up until he played two years at Collin county. [00:19:41] Speaker A: Okay. [00:19:41] Speaker B: Yep. And then the youngest is my daughter. She played soccer first, then she played basketball, and she ended up spending two years at a college, Heston College, right outside of Wichita. [00:19:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:19:54] Speaker B: So, yeah. And again, my focus was like, hey, get your education paid for if you can. So, yeah, they're very sports. Very, very involved in sports right now. They're not. You know, they are. My daughter, she's pursuing nursing. [00:20:07] Speaker A: Okay. [00:20:07] Speaker B: So all that basketball aspirations had to go. And my son, you know, he's doing real good with photography and drones and stuff like that. [00:20:14] Speaker A: We can all play sports our whole lives. [00:20:16] Speaker B: No, we cannot. [00:20:17] Speaker A: All right, so your kids played. Did you coach your kids? Like, I know you were a select coach, right, at some point? [00:20:22] Speaker B: Yes. [00:20:22] Speaker A: Was that your kids teams? [00:20:24] Speaker B: Yeah. So, with the experience that I went through with my son, I didn't coach him. And it was. It was difficult because, you know, a lot of the coaches, we weren't on the same page with a lot of things with development and all that, so I said, you know what? With my daughter, I'm gonna have to coach. So I did start a select program. It was called Swish select basketball. And, yeah, I had it since she was, like, fourth grade through high school. [00:20:49] Speaker A: Oh, wow. [00:20:50] Speaker B: Yep. So we played all around the country, all around the metroplex. And that's another reason how I know a lot of people, too. [00:20:55] Speaker A: Big commitment. Oh, yeah. Because everywhere you're going, you're also in the basketball connections and venues and, like. Yeah, yep. [00:21:01] Speaker B: So we carried, like, five girls teams. You know, I would always bring boys in. I was all. I trained boys and girls, but I had a girls basketball program. [00:21:09] Speaker A: So that was your focus. [00:21:10] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. [00:21:11] Speaker A: And that because of Jordan, your daughter. [00:21:13] Speaker B: Yep. My daughter Jordan, yeah. [00:21:14] Speaker A: Named after anybody in particular? No. [00:21:16] Speaker B: No. Not at all. Not at all. Nope. [00:21:20] Speaker A: Okay. So I just got to know. I feel like I asked you that. I probably know this, but somehow I forgot it. What's your grandpa name? [00:21:28] Speaker B: Paw paw. [00:21:29] Speaker A: Paw. [00:21:29] Speaker B: Paw. Paw paw. Yeah. My granddaughter is Dakota. Really? [00:21:33] Speaker A: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I love that she's three. [00:21:36] Speaker B: Yeah. Whenever she. I'm around her, like I'm her climbing apparatus, she just has to climb on me and. [00:21:43] Speaker A: Yep. [00:21:44] Speaker B: Mirror hug. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. For sure. I love it. I want change. [00:21:47] Speaker A: The jungle. [00:21:47] Speaker B: Oh, man. Yes. [00:21:48] Speaker A: I love that. One other thing that we always talk about. Not a fun subject to talk about, but with my son going through his ACl issues, you have had a few things right, over time, but, like, even kind of more recently. [00:22:04] Speaker B: Yes. Yes. [00:22:05] Speaker A: Your. Wait, do you have Achilles? [00:22:08] Speaker B: No. [00:22:08] Speaker A: No. Just. [00:22:10] Speaker B: No. No, I'm sorry. Yes, it was my achilles. Yes, it was my patella and my. [00:22:14] Speaker A: Achilles patella over there. [00:22:16] Speaker B: I don't know, man. Yes. [00:22:17] Speaker A: As adults. [00:22:17] Speaker B: Yes. [00:22:18] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:22:18] Speaker B: All during my playing career, I never had an injury. [00:22:20] Speaker A: Did you tell what happened? Coaching. You were. [00:22:23] Speaker B: I was coaching on both of them. I was just training, and I wasn't even playing. [00:22:28] Speaker A: Just out there. [00:22:29] Speaker B: I'm out there. Let me just see if I can dunk. [00:22:30] Speaker A: No contact with anybody? [00:22:32] Speaker B: Nope. No running. [00:22:33] Speaker A: Just your body went to go dunk, pop. [00:22:36] Speaker B: My achilles. [00:22:36] Speaker A: Oh, wait. Okay, wait. The achilles was from trying to dunk? [00:22:39] Speaker B: No, the patella was trying to dunk the achilles. I was just messing around, trying to close out on a kid to block a shot. [00:22:45] Speaker A: Nothing. No big deal. Isn't that weird how it happens like that? Like, it's just. It was some. You know, it was gonna happen, and it just one step, and it happened. [00:22:53] Speaker B: Oh, man. I don't wish that on nobody. [00:22:56] Speaker A: What was worse? [00:22:58] Speaker B: The patella. [00:22:58] Speaker A: Patella. [00:22:59] Speaker B: The patella. Yeah, it was. [00:23:00] Speaker A: You got a gnarly scar there, and that was a big problem for you. [00:23:05] Speaker B: Yeah, man. I don't wish that on nobody. No, it was not fun, Kelly. [00:23:09] Speaker A: No, I told you, the end of school year, our amazing middle school principal was like, let's have a staff kids game. [00:23:16] Speaker B: That's right. [00:23:17] Speaker A: And a kid. No big deal. Kid wasn't doing anything wrong. But our principal ruptured his patella attendant, and I thought. I thought of you immediately. I was like, oh, the stories chuck has told me. Yeah. School's about to start up. I just saw him yesterday. [00:23:34] Speaker B: And did you. [00:23:34] Speaker A: He's moving good. He's looking good. [00:23:36] Speaker B: I know. [00:23:36] Speaker A: He's doing all the things. All summer, I was like, he's working hard because I'm watching a little kid go through it, knowing how hard it is. I don't know what's harder, a 13 year old or a 35 year old adult, for sure. [00:23:47] Speaker B: Yeah. Little kids heal faster. [00:23:51] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:23:51] Speaker B: What else? Yeah. It took me for, ah, it was a year long process. [00:23:54] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:23:55] Speaker B: A year long dimensionally. Yeah, it was tough. It was hard. [00:23:59] Speaker A: Yeah, it is tough. [00:24:00] Speaker B: So no more bass. [00:24:01] Speaker A: Don't play. Yeah, that, you know, you're done. [00:24:02] Speaker B: I don't even want to touch a ball. No. So I still train, and I still do those things. But going out there to mess around. No more messing around. [00:24:11] Speaker A: Yeah. You're just watching. [00:24:12] Speaker B: Yes. That's it. [00:24:13] Speaker A: Yeah. So, yeah, you're. You're observer. [00:24:16] Speaker B: I'm observer. I'm a master observer. [00:24:20] Speaker A: Yes. Yes, I'm sure you are. Yeah. And you know all the people, so you're just observing and chatting on the sidelines. [00:24:26] Speaker B: There you go. [00:24:27] Speaker A: Meeting cool people and continuing cool stories. All right, well, thank you, Chuck. Thank you for that. [00:24:33] Speaker B: I appreciate it. [00:24:34] Speaker A: I know, right? All these years. [00:24:35] Speaker B: Yes. [00:24:36] Speaker A: Building up to it. And that's it. We're done. And I'm blank. [00:24:39] Speaker B: Yep. [00:24:39] Speaker A: I appreciate it. I know I've asked you to do this, so I appreciate you saying yes and being patient until I could finally just, let's put it on the calendar and go do it. [00:24:47] Speaker B: Awesome. You made it happen. [00:24:48] Speaker A: Thank you very much. Talking to you. [00:24:50] Speaker B: Thank you very much. [00:24:50] Speaker A: And I hope. I hope the audience out there got to meet Chuck. You probably already know. I'm happy, you guys, but. And if you see him on the sidelines, any events in Frisco, say hi.
